Just 400 miles from the equator, Sri Lanka has a reasonably equable climate. Temperatures and humidity are high year round, culminating on two monsoon seasons, the south-west monsoon of May-Oct and the north-east monsoon of Dec-Mar. These bring heavy rains and the country averages a very healthy 50 inches of rain throughout, with the highlands of the central south receiving the most rain (an average of 200 inches).

For tourists the best time to visit is before or after each monsoon. It’s unlikely that you’ll completely avoid some rain during your stay but showers pass extremely quickly. Temperatures, including coastal water temperature, remain high year round.
