La Tomatina – Bunol, Spain

La Tomatina is a food fight festival held on the last Wednesday of August each year in the town of Bunol near to Valencia in Spain. Thousands of people make their way from all corners of the world to fight in this ‘World’s Biggest Food Fight‘ where more than one hundred metric tons of over-ripe tomatoes are thrown in the streets. The week-long festival features music, parades, dancing, and fireworks.

The tomato fight has been a strong tradition in Bunol since 1944 or 1945. No one is completely certain how this event originated. Possible theories include a local food fight among friends, a juvenile class war, a volley of tomatoes from bystanders at a carnival parade, a practical joke on a bad musician, and the anarchic aftermath of an accidental lorry spillage.

The Great Migration – Kenya & Tanzania

The great annual migration of millions of zebra, wildebeest (gnu) and other antelope in East Africa tops almost every list of safari experiences. Each year around 1.5 million wildebeest and 300,000 zebra (along with other antelope) gather up their young and start their long trek in search of food and water.

Their journey runs in a clockwise circle and the animals cover a distance of around 1800 miles. There is no start or finish as such but the migration goes from the Serengeti Plains (Tanzania) in a northwesterly direction towards the famous Masai Mara Game Reserve (Kenya). The exact timing and route of the migration changes from year to year – depending on the rains.

Full Moon Parties – Koh Samui, Thailand

Some time ago, a group of tourists found that the most beautiful moon was in Koh Phangan (45 minutes from Koh Samui by boat). They arranged a party along the crescent-shaped beach of Haad Rin to celebrate the Full Moon night. From then on, every month, 10,000 – 30,000 people from around the world come to join the celebration.

The party begins at dusk, when the round yellow moon makes its appearance over the white sand beach. In twilight, small tables are lined up on the beach and thousands of lamps are lit. As the evening progresses, the beach explodes into a dancing frenzy as different DJs, jugglers and fire-eaters entertain the crowds. There are no barriers here, no inhibitions, just people rejoicing in the magic that is the FULL MOON PARTY!
